Going Green for your Wedding
On your special day you may be thinking, “Wow this day is going to make a huge difference in my life, how can I make a difference to the world?” There is a really easy option that you can choose, and that would be to make efforts to go green for your wedding. During your wedding and during your planning there are tons of simple and easy things that you can do to make a difference in the environment.
First off, during the planning process you are going to be doing tons of sampling, shopping, and investigating to figure out just what you want on your special day. When thinking about paper products; items such as invitations, place cards, RSVP cards, and planning materials, see if there is a way that you can use a recycled paper to create all of these items. You will be sending out and making so many different cards and invitations that using a recycled material will really step up your efforts to go green and will contribute heavily to the saving of trees.
When you are choosing your caterer, there are some things that you could and would want to take into consideration to make your meal as environmentally friendly as possible. Tablecloths, napkins, and dinnerware are essential for a meal, yet you can make this a reusable process. When talking to and choosing your catering service, ask if they have reusable cloth tablecloths and napkins. Additionally, request that they also provide reusable dinnerware that will be washed and used again in other events that they put on. By using reusable items you are cutting down greatly on the amount of waste that will come from your meal.
Photography typically takes up another large part of a wedding budget and time on your day. One way to save and be greener to the environment is to verify you can see your photographer’s proofs online instead of by print. This will save on mailing and paper production costs, along with ink. Once you have all of your photos selected have them printed on a recyclable paper and purchase an album composed of a recycled material. This way you will have the memories of your wedding and the memory of your contribution to the Earth all in one special place.
When thinking about decorating, try and find reusable decorations. When deciding on centerpieces there are a few options that you have to make them reusable and recyclable. One option is that you create your own centerpieces. If you are crafty, or have some crafty friends, making centerpieces could be a fun project. Try and use recyclable materials, such as glass, in your creation. Another option is after the wedding, allow your guests to take the centerpieces home. This way they can decorate another place.
These are just a few ideas that can contribute to your efforts to go green for your wedding. By making this theme known to your guests, it may also inspire them to take action in their own lives. Lead by example, and through your efforts to go green you may influence those around you to follow in your footsteps. At the end of your special day you can rest easy knowing you made a difference in the Earth.
